Microneedling in Winchester, Virginia

Skin-quality treatment with SkinPen Precision Elite, guided by diagnosis, skin condition, and The Layer Method™.

At Calibrae, microneedling is not treated as a generic facial or a one-size-fits-all collagen treatment. Danielle Wiley, PA-C evaluates what is actually limiting skin quality first — including acne scarring, texture, visible lines, and the condition of the skin barrier — then decides whether microneedling belongs in the plan.

What microneedling is

Microneedling uses fine, sterile needles to create controlled microchannels in the skin. Those micro-injuries activate the skin’s natural wound-healing and remodeling response. At Calibrae, treatment is performed with SkinPen Precision Elite, a prescription microneedling device.

How microneedling fits The Layer Method™

Microneedling works primarily in the skin-quality layer. It is considered when the visible concern is being driven by the condition and architecture of the skin itself rather than primarily by muscle movement or deeper facial support.

If the concern is actually being driven by volume loss, laxity, or structural change, microneedling may still be useful — but it may need to be combined with or staged around treatments such as Sculptra or dermal filler and facial balancing.

What SkinPen Precision Elite is cleared to treat

SkinPen Precision Elite is FDA cleared to improve the appearance of facial acne scars in adults age 22 and older across all Fitzpatrick skin types and to improve the appearance of neck wrinkles in Fitzpatrick skin types II through IV.

Microneedling is also used in aesthetic practice for other skin-quality concerns and treatment areas. Uses outside the device’s specific FDA-cleared indications are off-label and are discussed individually during consultation.

Concerns patients often ask about

Facial acne scarring
Uneven skin texture
Visible pores and surface irregularity
Fine lines and early skin aging
Neck skin quality and wrinkles
Overall collagen remodeling and skin refinement

Why diagnosis matters before microneedling

Not every “texture” problem is a microneedling problem. Sometimes what a patient sees as roughness or aging is being worsened by dehydration, barrier disruption, pigment, active inflammation, volume change, or deeper support loss. The Layer Method separates those drivers before treatment is chosen.

This is why Calibrae may recommend improving the home skincare foundation first, beginning microneedling first, or sequencing it with other treatments rather than treating every concern at once.

What treatment is like

Before treatment, the skin and relevant medical history are evaluated and the treatment area is prepared. The SkinPen device is then passed systematically across the skin using a sterile, single-use cartridge. Treatment depth and technique are selected based on the area, skin condition, and treatment goal rather than using the same setting everywhere.

Redness, warmth, tightness, dryness, or temporary sensitivity can occur during the early recovery period. Recovery varies by treatment intensity and individual skin response.

Single treatment or a series?

Some patients begin with one treatment, while others benefit from a series. The number of sessions and spacing depend on the concern, treatment area, skin response, and how microneedling fits into the larger plan. Calibrae does not automatically prescribe the same series to every patient.

Microneedling and regenerative add-ons

SkinPen is not cleared as a device for transdermal delivery of cosmetic, drug, or biologic products. Any regenerative, topical, or post-procedure products discussed at Calibrae are evaluated separately for safety, timing, and intended use rather than being assumed to be part of the SkinPen treatment itself.

Who may not be a candidate

SkinPen Precision Elite should not be used in patients with active skin cancer in the treatment area, open wounds or irritated skin, allergy to stainless steel or anesthetics, certain bleeding disorders or bleeding dysfunction, pregnancy or nursing, or current isotretinoin use. Other medical history, medications, active skin conditions, and recent procedures may also affect timing or candidacy and are reviewed before treatment.

The Calibrae difference

At Calibrae, microneedling is not the entire plan. It is one tool for one layer. Danielle Wiley, PA-C uses diagnosis-first aesthetic medicine to decide whether the skin itself is the primary driver, whether another layer needs to be addressed first, and how treatment should be sequenced for a more coherent result.

The goal is not to chase every visible concern with another procedure. It is to understand why the skin looks the way it does and treat the right layer in the right order.

Common Questions

Microneedling FAQ

Is SkinPen FDA cleared?

Yes. SkinPen Precision Elite is FDA cleared for improvement of facial acne scars in adults age 22 and older across all Fitzpatrick skin types and for neck wrinkles in Fitzpatrick skin types II through IV.

Does microneedling help acne scars?

Facial acne scarring is one of SkinPen Precision Elite’s FDA-cleared indications in adults age 22 and older.

How many treatments will I need?

That depends on the concern, treatment area, skin response, and your overall treatment plan. A series may be recommended when appropriate.

Can microneedling be combined with injectables?

Yes, when clinically appropriate. Microneedling treats the skin-quality layer while neuromodulators, filler, and Sculptra address different drivers. Treatments may be staged for better sequencing.

Is there downtime?

Temporary redness, warmth, tightness, dryness, and sensitivity can occur. The degree and duration vary by treatment intensity and individual response.
